The widow of the late Rep. Julian Dixon on Wednesday endorsed state Sen. Kevin Murray (D-Culver City) in the race to fill the 32nd Congressional District seat left vacant by the death of her husband.

Bettye Dixon’s decision was disclosed as part of a joint announcement with U.S. Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-Mission Hills), who also pledged his support to Murray.

“We strongly believe that state Sen. Kevin Murray is the best person running to take Julian’s place,” said the statement released by Murray’s campaign. “We recommend him enthusiastically to the people of the 32nd Congressional District.”

The two endorsements will give a major boost to Murray, who already has garnered the support of another powerful Democrat, U.S. Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Los Angeles).

The positioning to succeed Dixon, a widely admired, 66-year-old Democrat who first won election to his seat in 1978, began not long after his death in December. Dixon suffered a heart attack.

Of the 18 people who have filed to run in the race, Murray, former state Sen. Diane Watson and Los Angeles City Councilman Nate Holden are considered the front-runners in the April 10 primary election.
