Democrats Seek Hike in Medicare Funds

From Times Wire Reports

Congressional Democrats promised to fight the administration’s Medicare reform and prescription drug plan, accusing President Bush of abandoning his campaign pledge to help seniors.

The GOP administration’s budget would devote $153 billion over the next 10 years to modernize Medicare--the federal health care program for seniors and the disabled--and make medicine more affordable to retirees.

But Democrats said $350 billion to $400 billion was needed, and they urged Republican lawmakers to free up the additional funding by reducing the size of Bush’s $1.6-trillion tax cut.
