La Quinta Advances in North Orange County Tournament

La Quinta scored all of its runs in the first two innings and went on to defeat Mission Viejo, 7-1, in a quarterfinal game of the North Orange County baseball tournament Monday at Valencia High.

Ian Stewart had two doubles and Arnulfo Arroyo had a triple for the Aztecs (3-0). Senior Brian Kelley gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five to get the win.

Billy Hart’s first-inning home run gave the Diablos their only run.

In other quarterfinals:

Downey Warren 3, Esperanza 2--Patrick Rooney had three hits, including two doubles, for visiting Esperanza (2-1).

Palos Verdes Peninsula 7, Valencia 6--Palos Verdes Peninsula scored seven runs in the fifth to rally for the win. Valencia’s Hector Ambriz hit a two-run home run in the first.

In the consolation games:

El Modena 1, Pico Rivera El Rancho 0--Andrew Freeman’s bases-loaded single in the fifth scored pinch-runner Juan Vega and Jerod Bauer, who threw 62 pitches, was the winning pitcher.

Troy 2, Murietta Valley 1--Spencer Ricci gave up one hut and struck out four in five innings for visiting Troy (2-1).

In the Montebello tournament:

Orange 4, South El Monte 1--Tucker Boyd threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts and he also had two hits for host Orange (2-0).

Westminster 14, Compton 3 (6, mercy)--Freddy Rodriguez had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs for Westminster.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Edison 9, San Clemente 9 (Edison wins on games, 75-67)--Freshman Ryan Malawy won two of three singles sets, 6-2, 6-0, for the host Chargers (1-1).

Los Amigos 9, Santa Ana 9 (Los Amigos wins on games, 84-70)--Ivan Moe and Toam Nguyen won two of three sets in doubles, 6-1, 6-2, for visiting Los Amigos (2-0).

Irvine 9, Northwood 9 (Irvine wins 80-72 on games)--Irvine’s No. 1 singles’ player Eric Aarnaes helped the Vaqueros, sweeping his sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

In the Corona softball tournament:

Canyon 4, Riverside Arlington 2--Erin Slettvet had a double, triple and RBI for visiting Canyon. Jessica Runge got the win with seven strikeouts and Lisa Geer picked up the save for Canyon (3-0).

In the Long Beach Millikan tournament:

El Toro 11, Long Beach Jordan (5, mercy)--Stephanie Churchwell and Robin Ford-Feliz combined to get the no-hitter in the first round game.

Fountain Valley 1, Long Beach Poly 0--Katlin Skaggs scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a squeeze play for Fountain Valley (1-0).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Edison 117, Northwood 44--Edison’s Avery Wickham competed on two of the three winning relays and won the 500 freestyle in 5 minutes 9.75 seconds.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Katella 3, Orange 1--Drew Zinser and Menard Encarnacion had 10 kills each and Nhat Nguyen had eight digs for visiting Katella (2-0), which won, 13-15, 15-3, 15-10, 15-11.
