A new survey of more than 125 prints by German photographer August Sander offers a collective portrait of pre-World War II German society in “August Sander: German Portraits (1918-1933),” which opened earlier this week at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The survey, which is pulled from the Getty Museum’s collection--the largest holding of Sander photographs outside Germany--demonstrates how Sander strove to portray all strata of German society from peasant farmers to professionals, in the carefree period before Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich.
