A police officer was shot and killed early Wednesday after stopping four teenagers walking along a highway, police said.

The suspects were believed to range in age from 15 to 18, Police Sgt. Steve Wieland said. Police arrested a 19-year-old man Wednesday, saying only that he was a “person of interest” in the crime. Charles S. Champion was being held on unrelated burglary, robbery and assault warrants.

No other arrests were made, and no weapon was found.

The officer was identified as Steven J. Underwood, a six-year veteran of the force. He apparently stopped the pedestrians about five miles south of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

A second officer arrived shortly after the shooting and found Underwood lying by the road.

Underwood, 33, was married and had a 2-year-old child.
