Lawmaker Proposes Arming Educators

Texas state Rep. Suzanna Gratia Hupp, an advocate of the right to carry handguns, has proposed legislation that would let principals and superintendents in the state’s rural districts arm themselves at school.

Principals from rural districts asked Hupp to propose the measure so they could protect students from incidents such as Monday’s shooting at a high school in Santee, Calif., that left two dead, an aide to Hupp said. The bill would apply only to schools in counties with fewer than 20,000 people.

Hupp became an advocate of the right to carry guns after she watched George Jo Hennard kill her parents and 21 others in October 1991 at a Luby’s cafeteria in Killeen. Hupp had left her pistol locked in her car before she went into the restaurant, to comply with the law at the time.
