Mayoral Candidates on Sunshine Canyon
Re “Hahn Takes Aim at Sunshine Canyon,” March 6.
It doesn’t take much courage to pander to Granada [Hills] voters by knocking the Sunshine [Canyon] Landfill. It’s an easy way to get a few votes from north San Fernando Valley people, myself included. But if you want to convince me that you have the ability to be mayor of this city, I want you to show me some courage on the issue of garbage and waste disposal. Instead of taking a cheap shot at an easy target, propose alternative landfill sites. If it is your plan to close or limit Sunshine Canyon as a full-time dump site, then go on the record and show me a substitute, practical, specific plan to move my garbage somewhere else.
What do we do with our garbage? How do we dispose of it when we can no longer rely on landfill space? Show me some courage, James Hahn. Open yourself up to criticism on the issue by proposing a better system than what’s in place now and then explain how we [are] going to pay for it. Then let’s see if your rival candidates can come up with a better plan.
Side issue: The reporter mentioned that Sunshine Canyon Landfill as been in existence 40 years. If that’s true, then it’s been there longer then most of the homes in that area. One might ask homeowners near the landfill the following question: If you don’t like living near a landfill, why did you buy a home there in the first place?
