Suing the Government

The same people who object to the Legal Services Corp. also complain about the undisciplined federal bureaucracy--and cannot see the connection (“Welfare Lawsuits,” letter, March 7).
It is to be expected that beneficiaries will be hung out to dry, since a federal agency can withhold benefits (my experience is with Social Security retirement benefits) and be held liable for nothing more--months, if not years, later--than granting the benefits that were due. As long as bungled cases just become job security for bureaucrats, democracy fails. The LSC is the only help citizens may get to police the quality of civil servants’ work.
