100,000 Teenagers Vie for State Scholarships
About 100,000 of California’s top performing high school students will learn early next month whether they qualify for college scholarships offered under a new state initiative.
The program provides $1,000 merit scholarships for high school students in grades nine through 11 who score in the top 10% of their class or the top 5% statewide on the Stanford 9 exam.
The state has devoted $112 million to pay for the Governor’s Scholars Award Program.
Winning students’ money will be held in trust accounts and can be applied toward tuition, books and other essentials at accredited colleges, universities or vocational schools across the nation.
