Schools Get Grant to Help Students Learn English
The Los Angeles Unified School District received a $60-million state grant Thursday to provide extra instruction to students who are not fluent in English.
The grant will pay for classes in summer school and between tracks in year-round schools.
A $36-million award last year established the classes for about a third of the eligible students. This year’s grant will cover the rest.
In the elementary grades, the program is for students who are not making adequate progress toward learning English. At the secondary level it is for those who have not gained fluency.
About 45% of the district’s 723,000 students speak a language other than English and are not yet proficient in English.
