Local NAACP Head Resigns Over Boycott
The president of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People’s Hilton Head, S.C., chapter has resigned over the civil rights group’s plans to boycott the WorldCom Classic professional golf tournament at the resort island, an NAACP spokesman said.
John Ingram, also a member of the group’s state executive board, had sought to exclude the April golf tournament from a tourism boycott begun by the NAACP in January 2000 to protest a Confederate flag flying at the statehouse.
“It is clear to me that my views are not in accordance with NAACP policy, despite the enormous amount of time and energy I have devoted to the local branch and to causes of the NAACP over the last five years,” Ingram said in a resignation letter.
