Melodic Atmosphere

Opera star Lotte Lehmann, a Wagnerian soprano, fled Nazi Germany for the United States in 1938, the year this Hollywood Hills house was built. She sang at the Metropolitan Opera and in every major opera house in Europe. When she traveled, she was accompanied by two maids, a Pomeranian dog and huge leather folders filled with family photos. She was living in Santa Barbara, as a U.S. citizen, when she died at 88 in 1976. But she spent earlier years, when not performing one of the 100 roles in her repertoire, in this house.

* Features: If she were still living, Lehmann might know the house if she saw the living room, with its beamed ceiling, stone fireplace and floor-to-ceiling bay window, or the dining room, with its built-in china cabinet and French doors leading onto the terrace. However, Lehmann might not recognize the kitchen, with its granite counters, stainless-steel appliances and wet bar. Nor would she find familiar the office, with its wet bar, or the master bath, with its spa tub and steam shower. The renovated house has new plumbing, a satellite dish, DSL wiring and a security system. One thing Lehmann would love as a diva with an extensive wardrobe: Every bedroom has a cedar-lined closet.
