Memories of Maccagno

Regarding “Guilt by Association: When a Failed Romance Sours the Taste of a Place” (Her World, Feb. 18), about how romantic experiences affect travel: My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Maccagno on Lake Maggiore in Italy in 1947. We had met and married in Italy after a two-week courtship. Our hotel room had a breathtaking view of the lake and its beautiful gardens. We vowed to return.
During our 42 years of marriage, we returned to Italy but never to Maccagno.
Several years after my husband’s death, I returned alone. I boarded a sightseeing boat that stopped at all the little towns on the lake. Seeing the hotel in the distance brought tears to my eyes. I could not bring myself to go ashore. There were too many memories. Maccagno always will be a special place. ROSE CANEVARI Murrieta
I really enjoyed the Feb. 18 Her World column. Writer Susan Spano has the knack of “nailing it” every week. I’m not a big traveler, but I am an avid reader, and her column continues to be a high point of The Times.
