The House Ways and Means Committee will vote today on so-called marriage-penalty tax relief more generous than the amount President Bush seeks in his $1.6-trillion tax cut plan.

The bill raises a married couple’s standard deduction from $7,600 to $9,100 and expands the 15% tax bracket.

Bush has proposed easing the marriage penalty by allowing a 10% deduction of up to $3,000 against the lower earnings of a two-income family.
