TV Station’s Office Closure Is Rescinded
Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat has allowed the office of the Arab world’s most popular satellite TV station to reopen.
The Qatar-based Al Jazeera’s office in the West Bank city of Ramallah was shut down this week in response to an unflattering image of Arafat that it had broadcast as part of a promotion for a documentary on Lebanon’s 1975-90 civil war.
The closure was blamed on overzealous security chiefs, though Arafat himself has repeatedly shut down TV and radio stations and arrested several newspaper editors to squash dissent.
