Charlie’s Angels (2000). This reworking of the 1970s TV series is a potato chip of a movie. Tasty and lightweight, it’s fine for a cinematic snack, but making it an entire meal really isn’t advisable. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Bill Murray star. Columbia: no list price; DVD: $24.95; (CC); PG-13, for action violence, innuendoes and some sensuality.
Girlfight (2000). A powerful and empathetic melodrama with feminist underpinnings about a disaffected New York teenager (a potent debut for Michelle Rodriguez) who finds herself in the boxing ring. An impressive feature debut for writer-director Karyn Kusama. Columbia: no list price; DVD: $24.95; (CC); R, for language.
Once in the Life (2000). Laurence Fishburne’s deft and imaginative adaptation of his play “Riff Raff,” in which he discovers tragedy in the drug-deal-gone-wrong melodrama. Trimark: no list price; DVD: $24.95; (CC); R, for pervasive language, strong violence and drug content.
Red Planet (2000). Val Kilmer and Carrie-Anne Moss are on a catastrophe-plagued mission to Mars. The film looks great but plays flat. Warner: no list price; DVD: $19.98; (CC); PG-13, for sci-violence, brief nudity and language.
Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (selected theaters). This sequel to the 1998 hit feels like a half-hour TV show inflated into a feature film. Paramount: $14.95; DVD: $22.95; (CC); G. Times guidelines: Lots of potty humor. Young child deals with mother’s death.
What’s Hot
* Last week’s Top 3 VHS rentals:
1. “Meet the Parents” (2000). Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro star as prospective in-laws in one of the most fun mainstream comedies in years. PG-13, for sexual content, drug references and language.
2. “The 6th Day” (2000). From its standard-issue action to its half-hearted dialogue and acting, not even Arnold Schwarzenegger in a dual role can save this film about cloning. PG-13, for strong action violence, brief strong language and some sensuality.
3. “Bedazzled” (2000). An erratic comedy about a man who deals with the devil. PG-13, for sex-related humor, language and some drug content.
