A Bowl Costing More Than Its Weight in Gold

What a golden opportunity. Steuben has created a crystal and 22-karat-gold bowl to celebrate the release of Merchant Ivory Production’s film of the Henry James story “The Golden Bowl.”

The Merchant Ivory Foundation, which promotes the visual and performing arts, and Circline, a New York-based retailer of antiques and fine art, commissioned the limited edition of 50 bowls, which stand 8 inches high and measure 6 3/4 inches in diameter and sell for $14,000. Steuben will display one at its flagship store in Manhattan on April 16 through the film’s New York premiere April 24. One bowl will be auctioned at the premiere party, with all proceeds going to the foundation; a portion of profits from the rest of the bowls also will benefit the foundation.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Neutra architecture firm in L.A., the Institute for Survival Through Design will open a series of Neutra interiors--including some private homes as well as the Neutra Office Building--to the public on April 8. UCLA Extension will offer a class on “Themed Interior Design” on Wednesdays until June 20, from 7 to 10 p.m.

The Pasadena Historical Museum is offering an educational lecture and tour next month. On April 18 at 7 p.m., architect Donald Hensman (of Pasadena’s Buff and Hensman) will discuss 20th century architectural topics such as the changes brought on by California’s environmental and energy requirements in the 1970s and 1980s. The lecture, to be held at the Women’s City Club, 160 N. Oakland Ave., Pasadena, costs $25. For $40, you can attend the lecture, plus, on April 21, take a tour of Hensman’s early 1980s King House located under the Colorado Boulevard Bridge.
