UC Irvine, long known for strong science and engineering programs, has the best critical theory program in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.

In its annual survey of the country’s best graduate schools to be available on newsstands Monday, the magazine ranked UC Irvine atop such traditional academic powerhouses as Duke University, UC Berkeley, Yale University, Harvard and Stanford.

The critical studies emphasis is part of the English and comparative literature graduate program. It focuses on the theoretical underpinnings of history, literature, philosophy, art, anthropology and politics.

Karen T. Lawrence, dean of the school of humanities, said in a news release that “we’re delighted that this ranking will bring additional attention to what has become an internationally recognized program.”

The magazine considers school reputation, student selectivity, faculty resources and other criteria to decide the rankings.

The school’s English program was ranked 15th in the country. The magazine also ranked UC Irvine’s Graduate School of Management 45th in the nation, and the school of ecology’s psychology and social behavior program 54th.
