Youth Shot After Confronting Police
Alhambra police shot and critically injured a teenager who lunged at them with a knife Friday night, a deputy said.
The 16-year-old boy was in critical condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said Sheriff’s Deputy Faye Bugarin. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is routine, Bugarin said.
Police officers responded to a family disturbance call in the 1100 block of South Garfield Avenue about 2:36 p.m. In the frontyard, Alhambra officers were confronted by the youth, said Alhambra Police Sgt. Debbie Santana. The teenager refused to drop a knife and lunged at a police officer, leading the other police officers to open fire, hitting the youth in the upper body, Santana said.
Unlike the Los Angeles Police Department, the Alhambra Police Department does not put officers involved in shootings on leave, Santana said.
