Chinese Americans

* “Study Finds Persistent Negative Perceptions of Chinese Americans” (April 25) lists several survey questions under “Negative sentiment toward Chinese Americans.” Regarding “Have too much influence in the U.S. high technology sector,” I wonder if the survey results would have been different if they had used the word “contribution.” Where would we have stood in the world of the Internet without Asian Americans’ innovations and toil? How much does the Internet contribute to productivity? On a more personal level, just how much more could we have paid for our computers had they not had Asian-made components and designs? To me these are contributions.

The question labeled “Taking away too many jobs from Americans” insinuates that Chinese Americans are not true Americans. If these are verbatim quotes of the questionnaire, the Committee of 100 [the Chinese American organization that sponsored the survey] shot itself in the foot.
