Sounding a Warning

Share

* The Navy’s calm insistence that active sonar can be managed without deleterious effects on whales and other mammal life is ludicrous (April 26). The military acknowledges responsibility for last year’s mass deaths of beaked whales in the Bahamas only because scientific proof finally pointed to the culprit--a mid-frequency sonar in use for 60 years. Imagine the numbers of animals who suffered and died horribly in those decades. We are now asked to support a new, untested sonar in order to protect the U.S. from specious threats by enemy submarines.
