Liquid Audio Inc., one of the pioneers in Internet music delivery, said it will lay off about 40% of its work force. In sweeping changes for the company, Liquid Audio will consolidate its three Redwood City, Calif.-based facilities into one location to cut costs.
* MicroStrategy Inc. shares rose 23% after the money-losing software maker said its first-quarter loss narrowed as it cut jobs and costs. Shares rose $1.06 to close at $5.60 on Nasdaq. The loss narrowed to $22.7 million, or 28 cents a share, from $32.9 million, or 42 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose to $51.4 million from $50.6 million.
* Digital Island Inc. will fire 90 people, or about 10% of its 927 workers, by the end of June to cut costs. The provider of Internet and networking services also said its chief financial officer has resigned.
* Deutsche Telekom said it won approval from the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment for its $34-billion takeover of VoiceStream Wireless Corp., the last regulatory obstacle before the purchase is closed.
