Races Divided in South County
Re “Latino Foothold in South O.C.,” April 11:
Despite recent census data that indicate San Juan Capistrano’s Latin population is growing, the city remains as integrated as oil and water.
A deep cultural divide still exists in this quaint village.
As the 2000 census demonstrates, Latinos live within their enclave, in what would be considered by many as undesirable areas of town. Domiciles adjacent to the San Diego Freeway would hardly be considered favorable, elitist living quarters.
Homes farther away from the freeway or in new developments on hillsides have an overwhelming white population. Whites and Latinos continue, and will continue to, befriend and socialize with their own kind. In that sense, little has changed in San Juan Capistrano.
