World War II Memorial Still Under Fire

Share

‘Panel to Reconsider Site, Design of D.C.’s World War II Memorial,” May 4: I did not have a father due to WWII, and the possibility that veterans of that period would be recognized forever by a monstrous eyesore on the National Mall is, at best, an insult to their sacrifice. Even the Vietnam memorial, a sublime work of art, is not front and center on the mall. As a designer for 40 years, I can best describe the current design as appearing as if it were designed by Albert Speer (Hitler’s architect), meant to be built in a victorious Berlin.

I’m glad the commission has voted to reconsider not only the placement but the entire design concept of what is generally considered a hideous affront to not only the honorable memory of one of our finest generations, but all future and past American soldiers.
