Explosion in Gold Mine Kills 12 Workers; 2 Hurt
From Times Wire Reports
Twelve miners were killed in an explosion deep inside a South African gold mine in the country’s worst mining disaster in two years. Two miners were hospitalized.
The explosion tore apart a development area about 2,700 feet underground at the Beatrix mine near Welkom, about 175 miles southwest of Johannesburg.
Mine owner Gold Fields Ltd. said the blast may have been caused by a buildup of methane gas.
