An Oxnard police officer who shot and killed a 22-year-old man in January acted in self-defense, Ventura County prosecutors concluded in a report released this week.

Officer Augustine Barroso ran after Charles Joseph Valdez and shot him three times in downtown Oxnard on Jan. 18.

Police said the suspect, who was wanted for suspected parole violations, aimed a .22-caliber revolver at Barroso, but didn’t fire. The officer shot Valdez in the chest, wrist and upper back.

Senior Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert Calvert investigated the shooting and concluded in a 43-page report that it was a justifiable homicide.
