From Times Wire Reports

The State Department designated an outlawed group that calls itself the Real IRA a terrorist organization under U.S. law.

This means that leaders and members of the Irish Republican Army splinter group, which claimed responsibility for the deadliest bomb attack in Northern Ireland’s history, can be denied visas to enter the United States. The order also prohibits fund-raising in the U.S. and freezes any of its American bank holdings.

The Real IRA emerged in the wake of the Irish Republican Army’s 1997 cease-fire, which paved the way for a power-sharing government in Northern Ireland.

The Real IRA’s most notorious act was a 1998 car bombing in the town of Omagh. The blast killed 29 people and wounded more than 200.
