Nation Joins NATO Partnership Program

Tajikistan has joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace program, bringing it closer to the Western alliance, a senior U.S. military official said.
Army Gen. Tommy Franks, head of the U.S. Central Command, said during a visit that the former Soviet republic would now have a chance to exchange experiences with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and train its officers with the help of NATO experts.
The partnership program, launched in 1994, seeks to draw former Communist states into closer cooperation with the alliance but stops short of full membership.
