Search for Alleged Killer Turns to Sierra Nevada
The search for Roger Leroy Johnson has turned to the suspected killer’s favorite hunting grounds in the Sierra Nevada.
Johnson, 48, was an avid deer hunter in an area of Calaveras and Alpine counties, between California 4 and California 88 and to the Nevada border. Authorities believe he could be hiding in the remote area and could be heavily armed.
Johnson is wanted in Tuesday’s slaying of Pearl Burks, 48, and her grandchildren Ashley Burks, 6, Bobby Burks, 4, and Mikhala Burke, 5, at a home just southeast of Stockton. Authorities believe Johnson, armed with a handgun and knife, attacked the family because he was upset over a breakup with Rhonda Burks, Mikhala’s mother.
