USC’s Candie Kung, a Fountain Valley High graduate, shot two-over 74 Wednesday in the second round of the NCAA Championships at Mission Inn Golf Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., and is tied for 11th place with two-day total of 146, eight strokes behind leader Laura Moffat of UCLA.

Stanford freshman Angela Rho, a Sonora High graduate, is in a tie for 50th at 152.

Duke and Oklahoma State are tied for the team lead midway through the tournament with scores of 16-over 592, a stroke ahead of Georgia. UCLA is tied for fourth at 594, Stanford is ninth at 601 and USC is tied for 10th at 603. Pepperdine is 12th at 605.

That’s a Bargain

Pelican Hill Golf Club, one of the highest-priced public courses in the nation, is celebrating its 10th anniversary by offering a chance to play the course for $135.

The special rate is available to all golfers who play Oak Creek in Irvine, Pelican Hill’s sister course. The anniversary rate, valid for a limited time, will be honored seven days a week.

“We are pleased to be able to give something back to all the golfers that have supported the golf club over the years,” said Bobby Heath, Director of Golf at Pelican Hill.

Regular rates at Pelican Hill are $175 on weekdays and $250 on weekends. Anyone playing Oak Creek will receive a voucher for the discount at Pelican Hill. Rates at Oak Creek are $95 Monday-Thursday and $135 Friday-Sunday.

Another Hundred

Ocean Trails Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes announced that it will offer special Spring rates of $99 Monday-Thursday and $145 Friday-Sunday throughout the rest of May and all of June.

The regular rates at the Pete Dye-designed oceanfront course are $125 weekdays and $195 weekends.

Ocean Trails has been open since November, despite having only 15 holes open for play. The 18th hole was destroyed by a landslide in June 1999, and the reconstruction project has forced the closing of two other holes.
