Andal to Run for Controller

SACRAMENTO — State Board of Equalization member Dean Andal is expected to announce today that he plans to run for state controller next year.
The 41-year-old Republican from Stockton said he will run on a platform that includes lowering utility taxes paid by residents and businesses in Los Angeles, which are 10% and 12.5%, respectively.
“It’s outrageous for cities like Los Angeles to be paying these high utility taxes,” Andal said.
Andal said he plans to circulate a petition to place a measure on next year’s ballot to cut the business utility tax rate. The self-professed anti-tax crusader said he has raised more than $1 million for his bid to succeed Controller Kathleen Connell, who is being forced to abandon the post because of term limits.
Andal’s opponents in the race are expected to include fellow Board of Equalization member Johan Klehs, a Democrat from Castro Valley.
