Peninsula Hotels Extend Into Heartland

Share

Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Ltd., which operates the exclusive Peninsula hotels in Beverly Hills and New York (both rated five diamonds by AAA, its highest rating), is moving into the U.S. heartland this week with the opening of the Peninsula Chicago. The Hong Kong-based company runs nine hotels worldwide.

The hotel occupies 20 floors of a new structure built atop a swank retail complex at Michigan Avenue and East Superior Street.

A 14,000-square-foot-spa (due to open in July) and in-room luxuries such as marble bathrooms, DVD players and “command stations” that let guests adjust the draperies from bed are among the hotel’s luxuries.

About 200 of the 339 rooms and two of the four restaurants are expected to be open by Friday. Introductory rates, through Sept. 3, start at $295 per night; after that, the published rates are $425 to $4,500 (the latter for a 3,500-square-foot suite). Tel. (866) 288-8889, https://www.peninsula.com.
