Dangerous Pursuits

Another innocent driver was killed in a police chase, making the total at least two for this month alone (“1 Holdup Suspect Killed, 1 Held,” May 24). Southern California is called the chase capital of the U.S., which means that all other police departments elsewhere are either more professional or better controlled.

Is it worth it to wipe out a family to catch a thief? Is it sane? Only to the police mind, but the police mind seems to rule. In this democracy can the citizens and the civilian authorities they elect effect any change in police conduct?

It would be an interesting legal and political experiment to see if anyone can tell the police “no” and make it stick!
