New Prime Minister Squeaks Into Office
From Times Wire Reports
Ukraine’s parliament approved business lobbyist Anatoly Kinakh as the country’s new prime minister.
Parliament voted 239 to 2, with 12 abstentions, to approve Kinakh, the nominee of President Leonid D. Kuchma. Kinakh needed at least 226 votes in the 450-member parliament. The remaining members didn’t vote.
The narrow vote could spell trouble for Kinakh’s relations with parliament.
Kinakh heads Ukraine’s Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
