Storm Water Runoff May Pose Health Risk
After this week’s rainfall, public health officials warned people to avoid contact with storm water runoff and ocean water at all Ventura County beaches until Saturday.
Additionally, three local beaches have been posted with “no swimming” signs: San Buenaventura Beach at San Jon Road, Marina Park Beach and Hobie Beach.
Storm water runoff, particularly after the season’s first rain on Tuesday, can carry disease-causing bacteria to the beaches and ocean. Contact with contaminated water could cause eye, ear, nose or skin irritation as well as intestinal problems.
Information about the county’s Ocean Water Quality Monitoring Program is available on a recorded hotline at 662-6555, or on the department’s Web site: https://www.ventura.org/env--hlth/ocean.htm.
