Catholic ‘Just War’ Theory to Be Explained Sunday

* Church leaders from 10 congregations and public health care leaders will celebrate Project FAITH during a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Santa Ana Performing Arts and Event Center. * St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Tustin will host a Monday panel discussion, “Global Acts, Local Consequences: How God’s People Respond to Inhumanity.” Guests include Iman Sayed Moustafa al-Qazwini, founder of the Islamic Educational Center in Costa Mesa; Donald Will, professor of peace studies at Chapman University; and Paul Levesque, assistant professor of Christianity and world religions at Cal State Fullerton. * Eugene Pogany, author of “In My Brother’s Image,” will give a free talk at 8 p.m. Friday at University Synagogue in Irvine.

His book is the true story of identical twin men separated by faith after the Holocaust. They were born in Hungary of Jewish parents, but raised as Catholic converts until their story was unraveled. Pogany is the son of the Jewish brother and nephew of the twin, who is a Catholic priest. The service marks the anniversary of the first major event of the Holocaust, Kristallnacht (night of the broken glass). The synagogue is at 4915 Alton Parkway. (949) 553-3535.

Passing

Hundreds of people gathered Monday in Temple Beth El in Aliso Viejo for a funeral service for synagogue President Arnold Hahn, who died of a heart attack Oct. 27. He was 49.

Just hours before his death, Hahn took part in the Friday evening worship service that initiated the dedication of the new temple. Hahn had led the 650-family congregation through a difficult year of construction and transition.

Hahn was the chief financial officer for First Community Bancorp. He is survived by his wife Teena; daughters Melanie and Deborah; his parents, Serna and Howard Hahn; his brother, Steven, and sister Shari.

Donations in his honor may be sent to Temple Beth El and designated for the Arnold Hahn Memorial. The temple is at 2A Liberty, Aliso Viejo 92656.
