Gunmen burst into a bar and an attached hotel in a rough neighborhood in San Salvador and killed five men and five women in an execution-style slaying that could be related to the drug trade, police said.

Police hit shabby bars and restaurants near the crime scene and arrested 10 men believed to have helped carry out the killing, police spokeswoman Violeta Polanco said.

She said three of those in custody likely will be charged with murder. The other seven will be charged as accomplices.

“The motive is still unknown, but it apparently could be a settling of accounts over drugs,” said Carlos Martinez, assistant commissioner of the San Salvador police.
