County Allows Casino to Be Near High School

Despite complaints that it would be too close to a high school, Douglas County commissioners have approved plans for a hotel-casino in Minden, south of Carson City.
The project, set for a 116-acre site near the junction of Highways 395 and 88, will feature a 21,000-square-foot casino, 260-room hotel, 800,000 square feet of commercial space, an RV park and 378 homes.
In approving the project on a 3-1 vote, commissioners rejected arguments by opponents that the project would be too close to Douglas High School, which will be about 400 feet from the project’s property line and about 1,600 feet from the casino.
