Subdued Anniversary for U.S. Embassy Takeover

From Times Wire Reports

Protesters in Tehran chanted “Death to America” and burned flags outside the former U.S. Embassy to mark the anniversary of the day the compound was overrun in 1979.

The crowd of about 5,000 was filled out by children, teenagers and military conscripts. The children clowned around, paying little attention to speakers, who included the head of the powerful Guardian Council.

State television sharply scaled back on coverage of this year’s protest, and none of the famous hostage-takers appeared. Many of them now support reformist President Mohammad Khatami.
