The Anaheim City Council on Tuesday named Assistant City Manager David M. Morgan to replace longtime City Manager James D. Ruth after he retires at the end of the year.

Morgan, 51, a city employee for 25 years, is scheduled to assume office Dec. 29, the day after Ruth is set to step down.

“Obviously Dave’s service to the city will be a tremendous asset,” city spokesman John James Nicoletti said. “He has been a director of several different departments and overseen many of the operations that are integral parts of the city. He’s also been the assistant city manager for almost nine years, which should make the transition smooth.”

Ruth, 65, a onetime aspiring baseball player who has been city manager for 11 1/2 years, announced his retirement last month.

Among other things, he helped shepherd such major projects as the Arrowhead Pond sports arena, a second Disney theme park and an expanded Anaheim Convention Center.

Morgan said he was “honored and excited” to accept the appointment as Ruth’s successor.

“Anaheim is a vibrant city with an amazing history and an even brighter future,” he said in a written statement released by the city.

“I look forward to working . . . to help this community achieve its full potential as one of the nation’s premier municipalities.”
