Rangers Hire Hershiser as Associate GM

Former Dodger Orel Hershiser, 43, was hired Wednesday by the Texas Rangers as an associate to General Manager John Hart.

Hershiser’s duties include major league evaluation, player development, amateur scouting and on-field instruction.

“He was a great student of the game during his long and successful career, and brings a vast knowledge of pitching to the organization,” Hart said.

Eddie Murray was hired as hitting coach of the Cleveland Indians, returning to the team he played for when he got his 3,000th hit.

Murray had been Baltimore’s first-base coach the last two seasons.

Jose Canseco was released from a Miami jail after being charged in a nightclub fight that left one man with a broken nose and another needing 20 stitches in his lip.

Canseco, who played with the Chicago White Sox last season after being released by the Angels, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery in a scuffle.

His twin brother, Ozzie, was charged with one count and also was released from jail.

They face arraignment Dec. 4.

Merv Rettenmund was hired as hitting coach of the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers also hired Luis Pujols as bench coach and named Doug Mansolino third-base coach.... Tampa Bay hired Milt May as hitting coach to replace Wade Boggs, who resigned last month.

Backup catcher Greg Myers and the Oakland Athletics agreed to a $900,000, one-year contract.... Right-hander Brett Tomko and the Seattle Mariners agreed to a $1.1-million, one-year contract.

Baltimore pitcher John Parrish has been ordered to stand trial at Lancaster, Pa., on charges of drunken driving, careless driving and driving with an expired registration.

Parrish was stopped early Oct. 11 in Lancaster County after a police officer clocked him driving 10 mph above the speed limit and observed Parrish’s sport utility vehicle swerve in and out of his lane, officials said.

Parrish split last season with Baltimore and triple-A Rochester, going 1-2 with a 6.14 ERA for the Orioles.
