Faith-Based Folly

Share

Re “New Life for Bush’s Faith-Based Plan,” Nov. 9: Afghanistan, Israel, Northern Ireland--how many tragic examples do we need that religion doesn’t belong anywhere near political ideology? Experimentation with faith-based social services is not something I’d like to see implemented in this country. What can Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman be thinking to respond to Bush’s reintroduction of the idea with “it would be a great Christmas-Hanukkah gift for the country.”

The U.S. was designed as a secular government to protect the religious rights of all of us--not just some Americans. Setting aside such a fundamental provision of the Constitution would strip this nation of one of its strongest provisions for the freedom of the individual.
