Sheriff’s Exam Biased, 2 Female Deputies Say
Two female Alameda County sheriff’s deputies have accused the department and the county of discrimination, alleging gender and race bias during the administration of a promotional examination.
Claudia Stallworth and Kecia Kemp say the Sheriff’s Department promotional test is designed so that blacks, females and lesbians score lower than white men. An attorney for the two women says a county personnel survey shows a disproportionate number of white males pass the test and get promoted.
The two women also claim the Sheriff’s Department gave nonblack men study guides for the written exam.
Edwin Wilson Jr., an attorney representing the department and the county, said the examination process is not biased in any way.
