Public Works Would Stimulate the Economy

Re “Economic Stimulus Bill Quashed by Senate GOP,” Nov. 15:

The Republicans in Congress want to “get the economy going again” by large tax cuts that benefit mostly big corporations and wealthy individuals. The Democrats are advocating tax cuts to the people who didn’t get any in the first round; also extension of unemployment benefits and similar handouts. The first round of tax cuts didn’t prevent the economy from slipping, and they drained away money that now is sorely needed.

Why not, instead, devise public works projects (yes, like Franklin Roosevelt) that would fill many of our needs, such as road repair, transportation, schools, affordable housing, etc., and by so doing give people jobs. This would not be “busywork” but meaningful and productive activity to build up our infrastructure. Increasing employment is the best way to get the economy going.
