Call a Special Election for Valley Secession

Share

I fail to see the reason for the fuss over postponing the vote on Valley secession until a general election just to assure higher voter turnout (Nov. 20). Why not just vote on secession in a special election? Both sides of the issue will bombard the airwaves and our mailboxes with literature promoting their viewpoints. Daily we will be reminded of the last day to register to vote and of the day of the actual election. We get this during every election. Why would it change now?

And if, as L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky believes, “a decision of this magnitude should be made by the maximum number of people,” those voting during a general election will not necessarily cast a vote on the issue of secession. By making secession the only issue in an election, voter turnout on the day will prove beyond a doubt just how many Angelenos care about secession and which side they are on. Maybe both sides of this fight have something to fear by this scenario?
