From Times Wire Reports

Environmental Protection Agency Chief Christie Whitman announced that the national hazardous waste and Superfund ombudsman for citizen complaints would be moved to the EPA’s Inspector General’s Office.

Ombudsman Robert Martin says the move effectively abolishes the authority of the congressionally established position.

Clinton and Bush administration officials have had clashes with Martin and his former chief investigator Hugh Kaufman, after they recommended stronger cleanups of Superfund hazardous waste sites in Colorado, Florida and Ohio.
