At least 24 people were killed in new guerrilla violence in Kashmir, Indian officials said, as Indian and Pakistani troops traded fire for a third day across the cease-fire line dividing the mountainous region.

In the bloodiest clash, seven Indian paramilitary troops and three Muslim guerrillas fighting rule by Hindu-dominated India were killed in a 12-hour overnight gun battle in the town of Sopore, north of Jammu and Kashmir state’s summer capital of Srinagar.

The Pakistani-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack at Sopore.
