From Times Staff Reports

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the purchase of a $300,000 inflatable rubber dam for an urban runoff diversion project in the Greenville-Banning Channel in Huntington Beach.

The dam--60 feet wide and 5 feet in diameter--is the latest in a series of projects aimed at reducing the amount of bacterial contamination from urban runoff during the dry season. Water contaminated with bacteria flows down streets into channels and eventually to the ocean.

Costs for the Greenville-Banning project are estimated at $1.2 million, including pumps, a sewer diversion line and the rubber dam, to be purchased from Bridgestone Tire and Rubber Co. Completion is expected by Memorial Day.
