Blending With the Sea and Cliffs

TIMES STAFF WRITER

“A seamless blend of indoor-outdoor living in an oceanfront location” was a primary goal in building this Laguna Beach contemporary.

“Through the use of natural materials such as limestone, slate and copper, Rockledge by the Sea appears to be part of the cliffs below,” said architect Christian R. Light of C.J. Light Associates.

About this house: Rockledge by the Sea is the newest member of the exclusive community of 25 homes in a cove known as Rockledge.

Five doors to the south is Villa Rockledge, designed and built between 1918 and 1921 by Frank Miller, original owner of the lavish Mission Inn in Riverside. Miller used Villa Rockledge to entertain such stars as Robert Mitchum, Errol Flynn and Bette Davis.

Ten doors to the north is Moss Point, former residence of Woodrow Wilson’s secretary of state and an occasional retreat for President Wilson. It was built in 1917.

The newly built house was developed by John McMonigle, president of Monarch Homes, and Chris Brigandi, a local developer. They also share the listing.
