FIRST QUARTER

Share

Washington 7, USC 0

THE SCORING: * Washington 7, USC, 0. Todd Elstrom, seven-yard pass from Cody Pickett at 1:35. 20-yard drive, four plays. PAT--John Anderson (kick).

TURNING POINT: USC, which had driven 75 yards in its first possession only to be stopped on a fourth-and-one run by Carson Palmer, was at its 20-yard line on its next possession. On third down, Palmer fumbled the snap and the ball was recovered by the Huskies, setting up their short scoring drive. It was the only Trojan turnover in the game.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: The recovered fumble was the seventh takeaway by the Huskies’ defense. Washington has scored 31 points off of turnovers this season.

STAT WATCH: Sultan McCullough ran for 71 yards in 15 carries and Palmer passed for 46 yards. The Huskies’ Pickett threw for 22 yards.

SECOND QUARTER

USC 14, Washington 7

THE SCORING: * USC 7, Washington 7: Charlie Landrigan, 21-yard pass from Palmer at 14:25. 65-yard drive, five plays. PAT--David Davis (kick). * USC 14, Washington 7: Troy Polamalu, 22-yard interception return. PAT--Davis (kick).

TURNING POINT: Washington had second and nine at its six-yard line when Pickett badly overthrew tight end Kevin Ware. Polamalu had no one around him when he gathered in the ball, and ran virtually untouched into the end zone.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Pickett would leave the game after suffering a right shoulder sprain on a tackle by USC’s Bobby Otani. He was replaced by Taylor Barton, who would fumble three snaps--unusual for a Washington team that had committed only two turnovers coming into the game. The Trojans, however, could recover only one of them.

STAT WATCH: McCullough was held to seven yards in five carries. Palmer completed all seven of his first-half passes for 94 yards. Pickett passed for 61 yards in the quarter, and was Washington’s leading rusher with 33 yards.

THIRD QUARTER

USC 17, Washington 17

THE SCORING: * Washington 14, USC 14: Reggie Williams, 13-yard pass from Barton at 9:19. 70-yard drive in 11 plays. PAT--Anderson (kick). * USC 17, Washington 14: Davis, 40-yard field goal. 42-yard drive in eight plays.

TURNING POINT: Washington, a strong second-half team, started appropriating the momentum by allowing USC only one possession in the quarter. Palmer did not complete a pass, leaving McCullough to carry the offense behind the Trojan line, which was having one of its better days. Pickett started the second half for Washington but had to leave the game again. Barton returned and, after running a couple of plays in the shotgun formation, was in better control of his nerves and the Washington offense.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Barton avoided two sacks with scrambling runs of 11 and seven yards on the Huskies’ touchdown drive.

STAT WATCH: McCullough raised his rushing total to 115 yards. Washington’s Willie Hurst had a big quarter, rushing for 50 yards in five carries. Barton passed for 35 yards.

FOURTH QUARTER

Washington 27, USC 24

THE SCORING: * Washington 17, USC 17: Anderson, 25-yard field goal at 11:13. 44-yard drive in six plays. * Washington 24, USC 17: Hurst, 14-yard pass from Barton at 5:35. 66-yard drive in five plays. PAT--Anderson (kick). * USC 24, Washington 24: Kareem Kelly, 58-yard pass from Palmer at 3:47. 76-yard drive in four plays. PAT--Davis (kick). * Washington 27, USC 24: Anderson, 33-yard field goal at 0:00. 49-yard drive in 10 plays.

TURNING POINT: The Trojan kicking game would hurt them once again. Mike MacGillivray had two short punts, including a 32-yarder that gave the Huskies the ball on their 48. Washington quickly drove to the tying field goal. And after USC tied the score on Kelly’s touchdown, David Newbury’s kickoff went out of bounds to put Washington on its 35 with 3:42 left to play. The Trojans never got the ball back.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Palmer’s pass to Kelly was his only completion in the second half. Although sidelined most of the half with the injured shoulder, Pickett was still used as the holder on field goals; he grabbed a high snap and placed the ball for Anderson’s tying field goal. In addition to his touchdown catch, Hurst was a valuable runner for the Huskies. He carried the ball six times for 29 yards on the final drive.

McCullough finished with 132 yards in 32 carries. Hurst had 102 rushing yards in 19 carries. Barton and Pickett combined to complete 19 passes to nine receivers for 267 yards.
